OUR COMMITTEES

PR & MARKETING

PR and Marketing committee members advocate for incarcerated folks through the creation & posting of infographics on Prison Birth Project social media platforms. As such, we use social media with the purpose of informing the community about our work, and to uplift our mission. Members work on designing social media posts, creating flyers, marketing initiatives for events and keeping our website updated! Members repost, create content, and connect with the community through virtual platforms.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND ACTIVISM

The Community Outreach & Activism committee organizes advocacy initiatives and awareness events throughout the year. In the past, COA has held community panels, Good Neighbor Project trainings, symposiums, and a legislative roundtable. We also focus on amplifying the grassroots activism of community-based organizations. This semester, we hope to continue to organize events surrounding advocacy and awareness, as well as host an event relating to current legislation to create & enforce Pregnancy Standards of Care in the Michigan Carceral System.

RESEARCH

This semester, Research Committee members will either continue our previous project that entailed interviewing women who have experienced giving birth in prison or work on creating a resource guide website for advocacy. We also just recently finished our survey research journal that was recently published in a journal! We plan to use the semester to work on the project that our committee displays more interest in.

MEMBER EDUCATION

Member Education seeks to unite club and community members by creating a safe space to learn, discuss, and act on issues surrounding criminal and reproductive justice. This semester, we will focus on facilitating a (virtual) community conversation on the topic of Carceral issues, with the intent of educating and expanding the perspectives of those who choose to participate. To do this, we will be organizing mini-presentations and team-building activities to promote a productive and thought-provoking discussion during club meetings. Outside of club time, we aim to inspire discussions within classrooms across campus by teaching about the prison industrial complex.
